What is diabetes mellitus?
Diabetes is basically a disease that affects how your body makes insulin and how it uses glucose (sugar). Insulin is a hormone and it is made in the pancreas in an area called Islets of Langerhans. Insulin allows glucose to enter the cells. This glucose is used as energy.

There are different types of diabetes:

  • Diabetes Type 1 also known as insulin dependent-diabetes mellitus(IDDM) or juvenile onset diabetes

  • Diabetes Type 2 is also known as adult onset diabetes

  • Diabetes Insipidus – it is when the pituitary gland does not produce enough antidiuretic hormone. This hormone helps regulate the amount of water in the body.

  • Gestational diabetes – it is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy.

Causes of diabetes – The cells of the pancreas may be destroyed due to an autoimmune disease. An auto immune disease is when the body attacks the cells. In this case, the cells of the pancreas that make insulin are destroyed and the body cannot regulate glucose. This means that glucose cannot enter the cells and stays in the blood stream.

Symptoms of diabetes mellitus are important to identify so you can treat them as soon as you have them. This will help you keep your blood sugar under control. A long term high blood sugar can lead to long term complications like diabetic neuropathy.

You may experience episodes of hypoglycemia and you need to know what symptoms to expect so you can treat it appropriately.

A diagnosis of diabetes is needed when the disease is suspected. This test can be done 3 different ways. The test is usually done at least 2 times before you are diagnosed. A glycosylated hemoglobin test may be recommended to check how your blood sugar has been in the last 3 months.
