Diabetes Type 2

Diabetes type 2 is also called adult onset diabetes mellitus. According to literature, no one knows what causes type two diabetes. In people who do not have diabetes when glucose levels increase, the pancreas makes insulin to lower the blood sugar.

With this type of diabetes, your body makes little or no insulin at all causing high levels of blood sugar. People may have an insulin resistance with adult onset diabetes. This means that your pancreas keeps making insulin but your body cannot use it correctly and after many years, the pancreas may quit making insulin. Once this happens, your blood sugar will keep building up and treatment to replace that insulin will be required.

Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes – see diagnosis

Diabetes type two can be treated and controlled most of the time. Most of the time, it can be controlled with exercise and a diabetic diet but if normal levels are not achieved, medicine may be needed. A diabetes treatment may require insulin or oral anti diabetic agents.

Some of the blood sugar tests you may have done to diagnose diabetes type 2:

  • Casual plasma glucose – If you have signs and symptoms of diabetes, this test may be done first and if your blood sugar is 200 mg/DL you may have diabetes.

  • Fasting plasma glucose – Your blood sugar is tested before breakfast and without eating the previous 8 hours. You may be diagnosed with diabetes if your blood sugar is equal or higher than 126 mg/DL

  • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) – This is how the test is done: First and while fasting, you get your blood drawn. Second, a glucose drink will be given to you. Third, after 2 hours of drinking the glucose drink, a second blood draw is done. A blood sugar level of 200 mg/DL or higher may indicate you have diabetes.

If your diabetes type 2 has been poorly controlled over a long period of time, it may damage body tissues and organs.

Long term complications of elevated blood sugars:
    Heart attack
    Stroke
Kidney damage which may cause kidney failure
Nerve damage causing numbness in your extremities
    Blurred vision or blindness
Poor circulation and decreased feeling leading to slow wound healing and high risk of infection which can lead to amputation if not treated on time.

It is recommended you try to keep your blood sugar under control to prevent future complications. Please make sure you consult your physician to help you develop a plan that works for you.
