Heart Attack

A heart attack (MI) is caused when the blood supply to certain area of the heart is interrupted. The heart is a muscle (just like any other muscle in your body) that needs its own oxygen supply in order to function. It receives its blood supply from 2 main coronary arteries and their branches. When this blood supply is partially or totally interrupted, that area starves for oxygen and if it does not receive it promptly, it begins to die.

Blockage - The most common cause of MI's are fatty deposits (plaque) inside the lining of one or more of the coronary arteries. When the plaque breaks a blood clot (thrombus) begins to form in that area which can grow large enough to slow down or totally block the blood flow. This condition is called coronary artery disease (CAD). The disease that causes narrowing of the arteries in the heart and other parts of the body is called atherosclerosis which means hardening of the arteries.

Other causes of MIs - Certain heart valve problems can causes blood clots that may lead to an MI. Sudden and severe stress can also trigger an MI.

There are certain risk factors that can increase your chances of having atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Some of these risk factors can be changed and some cannot.
