Heart Attack Treatment

<>

Heart attack treatment may include the following:

  • Emergency treatment
One of the life-threatening problems that may happen during heart attacks is arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are irregular heart beats and they can cause sudden death if not treated immediately. A heart monitor will be attached to your chest and the medical team will monitor your heart rhythm and rate at all times.

  • Medications and Oxygen
You may need extra oxygen during a heart attack. You may be given blood thinner medications to help improve blood flow and to diminish the risk of more clot formation. You may receive nitroglycerin and morphine or other types of pain medicine to relieve your chest pain or any other discomfort you may have. You may also receive medications that will help your heart work slower but stronger.

  • Angioplasty and other procedures
A heart catheterization is an angiogram of the arteries in your heart. This procedure will diagnose the severity of the blockage. If there is severe blockage an angioplasty or any other procedures may be performed.

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery
This is an open heart surgery also known as heart bypass surgery. A heart bypass surgery can improve blood flow by sending blood flow around a blocked part of the artery.

  • Control of risk factors
High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, lack of exercise, and being overweight, increases your risk of heart problems. It is important you consult with your Doctors to help you control those risks. Smoking can further damage your heart, your blood, and your lungs. Over time, smoking can cause another heart attack or stroke. It is also important you stop smoking!
