Nitro Dur or Nitroglycerin is used to prevent chest pains

<>

Nitro dur (Nitroglycerin) is used to prevent angina (chest pain) by dilating the blood vessels which increases blood and oxygen supply to the heart. Since nitroglycerin is a vasodilator, it lowers blood pressure and makes the heart work less.

When a person has chest pain it is because the heart is not getting enough blood supply to a particular area and not enough oxygen is being supplied. By taking nitroglycerin, the blood vessels open up making the delivery of blood flow more efficient and the pain goes away.

Nitro dur comes in a quick-acting tablet or spray form or as a long-acting pill. The quick-acting pill or spray forms are used under the tongue (sublingually). It also comes in a transdermal patch and in a paste. Your Doctor will prescribe the right amount for you.

If the Doctor has prescribed a quick acting nitroglycerin pill or spray it is important you use it as prescribed.

This is how nitroglycerin is taken for chest pain

  • When you first start having chest pain place one nitroglycerin pill (let it dissolve) or spray once under the tongue and wait five minutes.<>

  • If the chest pain goes away then do not take any more nitroglycerin. If the pain continues, place another nitroglycerin pill (let it dissolve) or spray once more under the tongue. Wait five more minutes.

  • If the chest pain goes away do not take any more nitroglycerin. If the pain continues, place another nitroglycerin pill (let it dissolve) or spray once more under the tongue.

After you have done this three times, stop. If you continue to have chest pains do not give yourself more nitroglycerin. You need to call the emergency services or 911 because you may be having a heart attack.

YOU CAN ONLY GIVE YOURSELF NITROGLYCERIN THREE TIMES.

    NO MORE!!!

This is because your blood pressure may drop to dangerous levels. For this reason, it is recommended that you sit or lay down. If you are driving, stop the car before you take nitroglycerin.

If the chest pain is relieved with nitroglycerin but you are getting them more frequently call your Doctor, call 911, or have someone drive you to the hospital because you may be having a heart attack.

As always, taking your medications correctly can prevent complications. Here are a few things you need to learn that will show you how to take your medications correctly.
