What Is Oxygen?

What is oxygen? Oxygen is a type of gas that is needed for life to flourish on this earth. It is colorless, odorless, invisible, and tasteless. With every breath we take, oxygen is supplied to every cell in our bodies via the lungs, the heart, arteries, and arterioles. Without oxygen, every living organism dies within minutes.

People who cannot breathe properly need oxygen therapy. This means they may need to be on oxygen part of the time or all the time. Oxygen tanks(oxygen cylinders) and other oxygen supplies are delivered to those who are on home oxygen. There are a few local companies who deliver the oxygen equipment to your home if you are in need of this precious gas.

Oxygen can be obtained as a prescription only because it is considered a “medication”. Too much or too little oxygen can harm you. Since oxygen is a gas, it will explode if you smoke while on it. I saw a case once and the person was lucky to survive.

Oxygen is measured by a device called oximeter. It can be measured different ways but the fastest way is to place the oximeter on your finger and it reads within seconds. The normal oxygen saturation level is between 90 and 100%. Those who are below 88% at rest may need to be on oxygen at all times.

Symptoms of low oxygen
Pale skin
Bluish discoloration especially on your digits
Tiredness
Lack of energy
Breathing more rapidly
Increased heart rate

If you feel your oxygen is too low, you need to call your Doctor immediately.
