What Is Yoga

What is yoga? Yoga is a science that creates harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. It means union in Sankrit which is the classical language of India. It involves different physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to promote and improve general body and mind well being.

Definitions of yoga:
The Collins English Dictionary and Thesaurus defines yoga as "a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with the Supreme Being in a state of complete awareness and tranquility through certain physical and mental exercises."

"any method by which such awareness and tranquility are attained, esp. a course of related exercises and postures designed to promote physical and spiritual well being."1



The history of yoga:
Yoga history dates back to 5,000 years and it originated from India and the techniques practiced by the Hindus are to initiate spiritual growth.

There are 8 limbs or steps to yoga:

  • Yama - restraint
  • Niyama - healthy observances
  • Asana - postures
  • Pranayama - breathing
  • Pratyahara - sensory withdrawal
  • Dharana - concentration
  • Dhyana - meditation
  • Samadhi - higher consciousness
